Good practices in gender responsive evaluations

This publication showcases good and promising practices on gender-responsive evaluation (GRE) approaches and methods by featuring gender-responsive evaluations from UN Women and UN entities. It also highlights the important role of country-led evaluations of National Gender Equality Strategies and Actions Plans (NAP) in building national evaluation capacity and ownership for the generation and use of evaluative evidence to support national-level follow-up and review processes of progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Through its review process, it concluded that transformative results for women and girls require the elimination of the structural causes of gender inequality and discrimination that are embedded in deep-seated social and cultural norms and systems of power; therefore, measuring progress towards gender equality requires evaluation approaches and methods that are able to manage complexity and context specificity.

With its emphasis on inclusion, participation and non-discrimination, GRE can aid in ensuring that progress is equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and deep enough to transform structural inequalities across the intersecting social, political, economic, and environmental domains of women’s and girls’ lives.

Developed in a user-friendly and interactive format, the publication will enable users to further explore GRE approaches and resources and to deepen their own evaluation practices with respect to gender equality and the empowerment of women.
